CF3M CF8M STAINLESS STEEL CASTING
Stainless steel grades CF8M and CF3M are two of the most frequently used varieties of stainless steel. They’re a popular choice for many castings because they may be used in a wide range of industries.
CF3M stainless steel is a low-carbon version of CF8M stainless steel. The lower carbon content of CF3M stainless steel castings compared to CF8M stainless steel castings improves weldability and corrosion resistance.
CF3M CF8M STAINLESS STEEL CASTING: The Difference
CF8M and CF3M stainless steel alloys are both marine-grade steels, but there are some important distinctions between them. The percentage of carbon in CF3M is lower. The quantity of carbon in CF3M must not exceed 0.03 percent to be labeled as CF3M stainless steel.
Manufacturers add nitrogen to stainless steel grade CF3M in order to compensate for the lower carbon content. Nitrogen is added to the alloy for a variety of reasons. To begin with, stainless steel grade CF8M’s mechanical strength decreases as carbon content decreases. Second, its heat resistance is reduced. Third, because of the lesser amount of carbon in its chemistry, stainless steel grade CF3M may be welded without developing intergranular corrosion, unlike other grades that contain more carbon.
Here’s a table showing the chemical compositions of both CF8M and CF3M stainless steel casting.
